UK pension in Cyprus: how it is taxed (2026)
How a UK pension is taxed once you live in Cyprus in 2026: the foreign pension option, the yearly choice, government service pensions and lump sums.

In this guide
Update, October 2026: this page reflects the Cyprus tax framework in force from 1 January 2026.
How a UK pension is taxed in Cyprus
If you draw a UK private or workplace pension and you are Cyprus tax resident, Cyprus taxes that pension. The good news is that Cyprus gives you a choice in how. You are not stuck with one rule.
This guide covers the 2026 framework as published. It is preparation, not personal advice, and your own position depends on the type of pension, your residency and your domicile.
The foreign pension option
For a pension paid from abroad for services rendered abroad, Cyprus lets you pick between two treatments:
- Normal progressive scale, where the pension is added to your other income and taxed at the standard personal income tax bands.
- The special foreign pension regime, where the first €5,000 a year is exempt and the remainder is taxed at a flat 5%. From 2026 that exempt amount is €5,000, up from €3,420.
Which is better depends on how large the pension is and what else you earn. With the 2026 tax-free band of €22,000, the normal scale often costs less when your total income is close to that band. As income rises above it, the flat 5% usually costs less. Because you choose each year, you can compare both on the return.
You choose every year
The choice is made year by year, on your annual tax return. You are not locked in. If your income changes, you can switch to whichever treatment suits that year. That is exactly why a clean annual filing matters: every Cyprus resident aged 25 or over now files a personal tax return.
UK government service pensions
A government service pension is different. A UK government service pension (civil service, armed forces, local authority) is normally taxable only in the UK under the UK/Cyprus treaty, unless you are both Cyprus resident and a Cyprus national.
So a retired UK civil servant who moves to Cyprus will, in most cases, keep paying UK tax on that pension, and the Cyprus foreign pension option does not change that. Check which category each of your pensions falls into, because many people hold both kinds. GESY contributions apply to pension income.
Lump sums
Lump sums drawn from a pension scheme can be treated differently from regular pension payments, depending on the scheme and the timing of the withdrawal relative to your move. This is one area where you should take advice before you draw, not after. The order of events can matter more than the amount.
Residency comes first
None of this applies until you are Cyprus tax resident. You get there through the 183 day rule, or through the 60 day rule if you meet its conditions. Our guide on Cyprus tax residency and Non-Dom walks through both tests.
Non-Dom status is separate from your pension treatment. It mainly affects SDC on dividends and interest, and it lasts until you have been Cyprus tax resident for 17 of the last 20 tax years. From 2026, individuals without a Cypriot domicile of origin can then keep the SDC exemption for up to two five year periods by paying €250,000 per period (€50,000 a year equivalent), as a single sum after the Tax Department approves the application. The election is irrevocable and the payment is not refundable.
Next step
Your pension is your money, earned over a working life. You should know exactly how it will be treated before you move, not discover it in your first tax assessment. If you want a clear map of your own situation, start your relocation plan with ENCC.
